The Alt Tour Cycling Sandal Concept

This year, cyclist Lachlan Morton took on his own Alt Tour. He rode every stage of La Grande Boucle, one of the toughest cycling’s challenges in the world, and every transfer completely unsupported, meaning; with no teammates to shelter behind, no mechanics, no rest days, no hotels, carrying his own supplies…

Inspired by this incredible challenge and proof of determination, The Alt Tour Cycling Sandal concept came to life as a response to the struggle faced along the way.

In numbers:

• 18 restless days
• 220 hours of riding
• 5510 kilometers
• 65500 meters of elevation gain

Despite the extraordinary performance, Lachlan’s challenge had a purpose. To make every kilometre he covers really count, Rapha and EF Education First donated 500 bikes to World Bicycle Relief.

As you may imagine his equipment was enduring a lot of stress and after a couple of days he decided to swap his cycling shoes for Birkenstock sandals, gifted by a kind dot-watcher!

Unsurprisingly unadapted for the ride, comfort took a central role and made the performance factor secondary. Pedals were swapped too and several kilometers later the front strap was cut off.

In this concept iteration, classic performance elements were included such as BOA fit system, cleats and heel support. The overall and legendary fit of the Arizona model was kept whilst being adapted in curved fashion offering better performance whilst pedalling.
